Desolation Sound’s waters will allow you to effortlessly paddle past rocky islands and through narrow passages. This short trip is packed with immense natural beauty as we explore British Columbia’s largest provincial marine park. Each day, discover the gems of the intertidal environment – spot sea stars, urchins, crustaceans and birdlife, including bald eagles. Keep your eyes on the horizon for seals, sea lions, otters, humpback and orca whales. We highly recommend extending your visit to the Sunshine Coast with this guided, introductory level sea kayaking adventure which connects seamlessly to your hike on the Sunshine Coast Trail, or as an awesome getaway on its own.
Paddle routes during this tour are within the sheltered class 2 waters of Desolation Sound. However, during this tour you might be exposed to some wind, waves, mild currents and boat wakes. Your guide will choose the route most appropriate for weather, tides, mild currents and group. No experience necessary! The route is suitable for novice kayakers with the guidance of a tour leader who can also work with participants on skill building during the tour. Minimum age is 4 years old (in a "3-person" kayak). In order to ensure your comfort and safety, participants who have primary control of the kayak (the ones with the rudder pedals) should be of sufficient age, height, weight and maturity to do so.

This morning, you will be picked up from your accommodation and transferred to our base in Desolation Sound where we will have a thorough briefing, complete packing and pre-tour instruction, which will take a bit of time before we venture out. Please note that your guide will always have the authority to make the final decision on kayak configuration and safety related issues. ‘Safety first, fun will follow.’ Our route takes us out through Okeover Inlet and into the waters of Desolation Sound. There are many nooks and crannies to explore, sea life to discover, and idyllic lunch spots to enjoy, as we make our way to our 'base camp'. We’ll be setting up camp for two nights on a scenic location - Hare Point or Feather Cove.
The second day we’ll travel light into the heart of Desolation Sound and we’ll be surrounded by the immense natural beauty BC’s largest provincial marine park. Often we’ll be followed by seals and sometimes we even encounter some of the whales that visit this area. In addition to enjoying the spectacular Sea-to-Sky scenery, swimming or snorkelling in these waters is a fun bonus of your amazing camping and kayaking adventure!
Our final day on the water has us taking the 'path of least resistance' back to our starting point near Desolation Sound Resort, arriving between 3pm and 4pm. Services end with a transfer back to Powell River. If you are flying out today, be sure you are departing no earlier than 6pm. Otherwise, we are happy to help arrange accommodation either at the resort or back in Powell River.
