Trip Summary

The Little Yoho Valley, with its incredible scenery and terrain, has a longstanding reputation for outstanding alpine climbing. Spectacular peaks and glaciers rise above the valley floors with some of the highest waterfalls in the Canadian Rockies dramatically appearing from within their walls. Based out of the historic and comfortable Stanley Mitchell Hut, our targets over the next couple of days will include The President (3138m), Vice President (3066m), Mt. McArthur (3021m), Mt. Pollinger (2812m), Mt. Kerr (2836m), and Isolated Peak (2832m). With this wide range of opportunities, intermediate mountaineers will be sure to add more peaks to their credit.

Suitability

This trip is rated intermediate mountaineering expedition. Participants need prior basic glacier mountaineering experience. You must be fit and in good physical shape. Any training you can do in advance, particularly that involving hiking up steep terrain, will enhance your enjoyment of this adventure.

Technical Grading Description: The conditions are variable with generally low angled slopes with some sections of moderately steep snow or easy rock where ropes are required. The targeted peaks are not overly technical but we will have long days on varied terrain.

Itinerary

We meet in Canmore at 8:30 am. After issuing food and gear we pack up and then drive west to Field, BC (just west of Lake Louise, AB). We begin our hike at the third highest waterfall in Canada, Takakkaw Falls, measuring 254 meters (833ft). We’ll take our time to enjoy the incredible scenery as we make our way up the Yoho Valley to the Stanley Mitchell Hut, set in a beautiful meadow, not far from the base of The President. After settling into the Hut later in the afternoon, we'll get ourselves ready for a climb the next day.

Each day we will choose a suitable mountaineering objective. There are several large, glaciated peaks surrounding the upper valley, all of which are good intermediate objectives. They are: The President (10,295 ft., 3138m) located on the south side of the valley which is normally climbed via the north-facing President Glacier to the President Col and then following the East Ridge to the Summit. This peak can also be climbed by the SW Ridge. The Vice President (10,058 ft., 3066 m) is climbed directly from the President Col. Mount McArthur (9,911 ft., 3021m) is on the north side of the Valley as is Isolated Peak (9,334 ft., 2845m). Both are reached by the McArthur Glacier which we access below Isolated Col. At the head of the valley, above Kiwetinok Pass is Mount Kerr (9,394 ft., 2863m) which is more of a rock scramble involving some route finding and terrain evaluation skills.

After packing up our gear we begin our descent along the scenic Iceline trail, following the contours of the Emerald Glacier. Our return hike offers spectacular views of the Yoho Valley and the President Range.
